Netflix Unveils Thrilling Main Trailer for Epic Japanese Series ‘Last Samurai Standing’, Introduces New Cast Member

Netflix is just about to blow the lid off the hype for its brand new Japanese series, Last Samurai Standing, with the main trailer now live . This five-minute long trailer takes viewers on a thrilling ride into feudal Japan where 292 warriors are faced off in a brutal battle royale. And it gets even more exciting with top actor Hiroshi Abe joining the already all-star cast – that’s a great sign for the global premiere on November 13 .
The main trailer throws you right into the thick of it with an insane game of survival where everyone is out to get each other. You’re talking brutal arrows flying everywhere, warriors using stealth or brute force in an effort to outlast each other. You get the picture – this is going to be a wild ride with literally no one safe from the blade.
One character who’s got everyone a bit worried is Gentosai Okabe – a pretty legendary guy with a seriously intimidating presence and an aura of fear around him. Okabe is like a supposed “monster” to the other players in the game, and his arrival just sets everyone’s nerves on edge. You don’t want to mess with this guy – at least, that’s what the trailer seems to be hinting at.
What is it Like to be a ‘Fallen’ Samurai in 1878 Japan?
Last Samurai Standing is set in a real pivotal time for Japan – just a decade after the Meiji Restoration which brought the samurai era to an end . These poor guys – former warriors with their status and privileges taken away – have to deal with poverty and a disease that’s just killing them off by the thousands. What does a guy have to do to get back on his feet? Well – one idea that pops up in the story is a high-stakes tournament called Kodoku, a game that’ll really test their mettle (think of a giant game of tag but instead of tagging, they’re fighting to the death).
Here are the basic rules: 292 samurai hang out at the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto, each tagged with a wooden piece of cardboard. They then have to travel down the Tōkaidō route all the way to Tokyo, effectively stealing each other’s tags. The last one standing gets a cool 100 billion yen – enough to save a family from poverty and the looming threat of the cholera outbreak. The main character, Shujiro Saga (played by Junichi Okada), joins this bloody game for one reason alone: to save his wife & kid from starvation.

Action-packed & Made for the World
Okada, who is starring in, producing, and choreographing the fight scenes, really wants to shake things up with this one. According to him, he was on a hidden mission to “push the limits of the period drama genre and turn it into an action-packed one at the same time… an idea that could be made entirely in Japan for the world to enjoy” .
This series brings Okada back together with director Michihito Fujii – a collaboration that started with the 2023 movie Hard Days. Fujii has said that despite its period setting, the story somehow feels very modern – almost like the story of Covid-19 all over again. “Survival, uncertainty – all these themes still apply”, he said.
The production was executed on an unprecedented scale for a Japanese series. The massive battle scene at Tenryuji Temple, for instance, was staged without digital enhancement. “Every person on that battlefield was a cast member or part of the action team,” Okada told Variety, describing the exhausting but unforgettable night shoots .
